“Come on Linda, hurry!” Ethan said.
Linda struggled to catch up. It wasn’t very easy to run in a dress.
“Ethan, wait up! We have to stick together, remember?” Linda cried.
Ethan suddenly stopped. But not because he was waiting for Linda. He just wanted to finish his candy bar.
“Ethan, are you sure, you know where to look?” asked Linda. “I mean, we don’t even know for sure if what we saw really was the haunted scarecrow!”
Ethan stared at the ground. Maybe Linda was right. This whole search was turning out to be a big flop.
Suddenly Ethan grinned. He turned back towards Linda.
“Well I know a way we can find out if the scarecrow is real, and if it is, catch it at the same,” said Ethan.
“How?” Linda asked puzzled.
“Remember how Lea told us that the scarecrow may be attracted to screaming?” asked Ethan.
“Yeah,” Linda said slowly. Than it hit her.
“But, Ethan! Even if the scarecrow doesn’t come, won’t someone else come when they hear us?”
“Oh, come on Linda, I heard like, twenty kids scream already! And even if someone Does come, we can just tell them that I jumped out and scared you!” said Ethan.
Linda groaned. “Fine.”
“Alright, on the count of three, we’ll both scream as loud as we can!” Ethan said.
“Ok,” said Linda.
“Alright, ready? One, two, three…..”
Lea jumped. Her heart was beating like crazy.
Of all nights to lose Linda and Ethan, it had to be Halloween?! Lea thought.
Both Lea and Tenny had been frantically searching the neighborhood, but still hadn’t found Ethan or Linda.
Lea had just finished looking on her side of the street and could see Tenny finishing up her’s.
Tenny walked over to her.
“Any luck?” she asked.
Lea shook her head sadly. “No, I asked everyone I saw.”
Tears started to roll down Lea’s face.
“Don’t worry Lea, we’re going to find them,” said Tenny.
Lea sniffed. “I know.”
Suddenly they heard a noise that made both of them jump.
“What was that?” asked Lea.
“I think it was just someone screaming again,” said Tenny. “You know how people like to scare each other on Halloween.”
Then they heard the scream again.
“Wait a minute, that sounds like Linda!” Lea cried.
She immediately took off running. Tenny followed close behind.
“Ethan, I don’t think this is working,” Linda complained. “We’ve been waiting for what, five minutes?”
“Maybe the scarecrow is just having a hard time finding us,” said Ethan. “Let’s just wait a few more minutes.”
“That’s what you said three minutes ago!” Linda cried.
Suddenly they both heard a loud *SNAP* behind them.
They both turned their heads quickly, and saw something big, scary, and……well, you get the idea.
“Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!” they both screamed, and ran.
They had already gone about fifty yards when suddenly they stopped and looked at each other.
Then they turned around and started running straight at the scarecrow. (yes, it was the scarecrow they ran from.)
When they were about twenty yards away from it, the scarecrow sudently turned and ran.
Linda had been chasing the scarecrow for about five minutes, when she suddenly realized that Ethan was no longer with her.
Where could he be? thought Linda.
She raced around the corner and tried to catch up with the scarecrow.
Than she noticed that she was actually on the same street that the house was on, and suddenly saw three figures coming toward her.
When she got closer, she saw that they were Ethan, Lea, and Tenny.
When they saw her, they all started to run toward her.
Ethan started to out run Lea and Tenny, and sudently started to give out a loud war cry.
Linda could see what he was trying to do: Trap the scarecrow so that couldn’t escape again.
Both Linda and Ethan had almost caught up to it, when the scarecrow suddenly turned onto the driveway and raced into the garage.
Ethan and Linda tried to follow it, but somehow the scarecrow had managed to close the garage door before they got there.
“Aww man, we were so close!” Linda cried.
“It’s not over yet,” said Ethan. “We know it’s in the garage, so if we hurry round the front, we can still catch it!”
But as they started to turn around the corner, they found three things all at once: Lea stareing at them red eyed from crying, Tenny giving them the you-are-in-BIG-trouble glare, and someone else coming toward them saying “Everyone, into the house, Now!”
Ethan swallowed. Mom.
Soooooo, if you’re wondering, basically what happened next was this: Both Ethan and Linda had to sit through a long lecture about how they weren’t supposed to leave Tenny and Lea and ended up being grounded.
Also Mom took Tenny and Lea back out to do more Trick-or-Treating, but Ethan and Linda had to stay home. And go to bed early!
“So, are we still going to try to find out if the scarecrow is in the garage?” Linda asked Ethan when they were going upstairs.
Ethan shook his head. “No, Lea and Tenny said that they already checked, and no one was in it.”
Linda sighed. “Soooo, I guess the hunt is over huh?”
“Are you kidding?! I’m not going to stop looking for the haunted scarecrow until I catch it, if it’s the last thing I do!” said Ethan
“Well, That’s a little extreme,” Linda said to herself.
